Local Initiatives

Wichita Parks & Recreation announce a new program that encourages and rewards residents for visiting public parks. The Park Passport program encourages residents to visit 18 specific local parks. A Park Passport can be picked up at any recreation center, Watson Park or printed at www.wichita.gov. To be eligible to win rewards, participants must:

  • Visit as many of the 18 parks listed on the passport;
  • Locate the Park Passport sign at each park, which ensures a participant is in the right area;
  • Answer the park question on the passport and turn in the passport at any recreation center or Watson Park by September 3.

Three winners – one entry per household – will receive one of three Family Fun Packs donated by Academy Sports & Outdoors. The fun packs include items such as camping equipment and bicycles.

It’s time for Fish Tales Tuesday December 11, 10am-11am

readingpond002Join the WATER Center Staff for a free storytime and nature suprise!

The program is designed for Pre-K aged children, but all are welcome to attend.

bookThis month’s book is “Come Away from the Water Shirley” by John Burningham.  Come ready for Arrrrrg, a Piratey craft .

The WATER Center is located in Herman Hill Park on the corner of Pawnee and Broadway.  You can park in the lot by the playground or behind the WATER Center building.  The building has fountains out front.  Wander up the path towards the fountains and enter the building for storytime.  After storytime you can play in the museum or hike along the streamside paths towards the Arkansas River.

I usually write about activities that I hope will inspire you to head outside to play.  This weekend I have no motivation to share other than the gorgeous WEATHER!  It’s Dec 1 and it’s going to be int he upper 60s or 70s.  If that doesn’t get you out the door to play, nothing will.

I don’t care what you do, just get outside and play.  Jump rope.  Ride bikes. Play tag.  Hunt for wildlife at Pawnee Prairie Park.  Or check out the waterways at Chisholm Creek Park.

Tonight is going to be nice too.  Come to downtown Wichita to Lights on the River.  See a boat parade, try your hand at the activities, watch fireworks over the River.  Santa will even make a visit.  Click HERE for event details.
